Sarah turned. "Oh, hi, Mrs. Avery," she said, a little annoyed that the Literature teacher was approaching her in the hallway. Mrs. Avery was a fairly attractive woman, in her mid-thirties - a little younger than her own mother. But Sarah still didn't like the woman getting into her business.
"Are we going to talk about what happened yesterday?"
Sarah opened her locker, then took out her books. "It's none of your business what happened. You got that?"
"Well, of course, it's none of my business. I shouldn't even have asked."
"Huh?" Sarah asked. She was expecting the teacher to push Sarah further, but instead Mrs. Avery just gave up. That wasn't like her.
The woman noticed Sarah's confusion. "Are you okay?"
"Yes. Now, go away," Sarah said, closing her locker.
"I'm thinking of taking a vacation."
"Okay, whatever."
"I think I'll go right now."
"During school?"
"Well, there's no time like the present." The teacher turned and walked towards the exit and just left the school.
Sarah watched her leave. Mrs. Avery wasn't really going on vacation right now, was she? Maybe she was just getting something out of her car. Yeah, that was probably it. She was really acting strange.
Putting it behind her, Sarah headed to her first class of the day.
