Sitting on the toilet inside the stall, Athena overheard the girls talking.
"There you are," one girl said. Without looking, Athena was unable to identify her.
"What did the nurse say?" asked the other girl, who Athena couldn't identify either.
"She said that I need to eat more. She even wrote out instructions for my 'new' diet." She grabbed her belly. "God, I am so hungry. But I don't know why."
"Maybe you need to eat?" asked the first girl.
"Yeah, I got that, smart ass," Sarah said.
"Speaking of eating a lot," the second girl said. "Did you gain some weight since this morning?"
"What?" Sarah asked. She paused for a moment, probably looking at herself in the mirror. "I don't believe it. I'm heavier in my midsection. How did that happen?"
"Maybe you need more exercise," the second girl suggested.
"I was getting too much exercise earlier. I don't think I've ever sweated that much in my whole life. Those moves were hard."
"They certainly weren't hard for Gladys," the second girl said.
"Yeah," the first girl agreed. "I'm as surprised as anyone. You'd think that girl would be bumbling all over the place, but she can really move."
"Well, there's got to be a catch," Sarah said. "She's a giant blob. Before today she could barely move around at all. Maybe she's taking drugs. You know, something like steroids."
Athena tried to listen more, but the three girls seemed to be leaving the restroom. She was alone, at last.
She tentatively opened the stall door and walked out, thinking about what Sarah and her friends were talking about. Gladys Brewer suddenly being able to do cheerleading moves with the greatest of ease? Athena wondered if maybe one of those sticky notes had something to do with it.
