(Note: I had said Mikey made Jon forget the stone but let's ignore that...)

"Mom!" yelled Jon. "It's grandpa's wishing stone!" After all, Zoe knew about Grandpa's wishing stone. But he didn't remember his mother ever saying anything that sounded, even in hindsight, like she had heard of a wishing stone."

"What? Stop trying to make things up."

"I can prove it," said Jon.

"Fine," said his mother. "Prove it. This has to be good. Really, wishing stones?"

"But..." He looked at the note he had torn up. He realized it was useless, unless notes could be taped together. Maybe he couldn't prove it, after all. Unless... Wait, he didn't have to tape anything together. "Mikey was writing something. He said he was writing to himself, but what he really wrote... It'll prove it."

"All right," said his mother. "Mikey, show me what you just wrote."

Mikey was about to hand the pad over when Jon suddenly realized he was making a big mistake. He had panicked! The best way to prove the whole thing works is to ask his mother to make a wish on the stone, not to ask her to read the note. Besides, the notes weren't reversible, and he didn't even know if Mikey had finished writing a whole sentence--it could be a partial wish.

"Never mind," said Jon. "Mom, just ask the stone for something. Make a wish on it."

She looked at him, puzzled, but said "First things first" and took the note from Mikey. She was about to look at it when....
