The next day they tried calling Becky. Unfortunately, nobody answered... at least the first two times, so they had to leave a message. But shortly after that their own phone rang. Caller ID showed it was Becky, or at least her house.
Jason picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Hello," said an adult woman's voice. "I'm Becky's mother. Got your message, I just have to tell you she's out at Ellen's house. You said it was something important only she could talk about?"
"Right." How could he possibly tell Becky's mother what the important thing was? It's not as if you can say "I just had a sex change, didn't she too?" But Becky's mother would have had to have known. Surely he could talk to her.
Finally he decided he wasn't going to. Instead he went over to Ellen's house. Maybe he could find Becky there. He knocked on the door, then rang the bell. As he waited, he wondered nervously... he hadn't been nice to Becky, but now he needed to talk to her. Would she even be willing to help?
Becky opened the door and the first words out of Jason's mouth were "Becky, I'm sorry about before but I have to talk to you... please, don't close the door on me..."
Becky eyed him and finally decided that he was sincere. "Fine, come on in." She led him to Ellen's room where Ellen and Laura already were, and he was about to stammer out an explanation when he saw a sticky note on one of Ellen's posters. It was blocked by a clock on a dresser so it was easy to miss, but he was at just the right angle to see it.
He motioned the others away, but only succeeding in attracting their attention, and read off the note helplessly. "I wish I was five years older."
