It had been a few days since Biff and Sarah had arrived from their supposedly reversed world. Dr. McMillan kept insisting that it was their world that was reversed. She had also insisted on keeping them in observation for a few days and running some tests on them before letting them loose in her world.
Aside from their brief encounter when they had first arrived, neither Biff or Sarah had seen anything of their counterparts. Dr. McMillan seemed to be intentionally keeping them at a distance, and that only made them wonder what was going on.
Sarah was currently sitting on her bed with her legs drawn close and was resting her head on her knees as Biff paced around the room. They had been there for days, only being allowed out for bathroom breaks and for various tests. Otherwise they had been locked in their room with little means of entertainment.
Sarah looked up as she heard the door click; in walked Dr. McMillan, followed by an assistant with a clipboard.
“How much longer are we going to be stuck in here, Doc?” Biff asked as he stopped pacing. Dr. McMillan ignored him for a moment, taking the clipboard from hir assistant and reading the results. When shi was ready to answer, shi looked at Sarah.
“Hopefully not for much longer. We’ve done our testing and you both seem perfectly fine. Well… As fine as you can be, given your situation. All that needs doing now is setting up a place for you to stay until we fix the machine. We can’t have you living here. The lab isn’t set up for that.” So far, that was about the only thing that Biff, Sarah and Dr. McMillan agreed on. “As much as I don’t like it, we thought that it would be best if you went and lived with your counterparts. That way, you can learn how to blend into our world from them.”
“Blend in?”
“Well, considering that the machine is going to take a while for the adjustments, you’ll need to go out into the real world. We’ll keep you at your respective homes for a while until you adjust, and then we’ll need to enrol you into the local school system.” Dr. McMillan made a note on the clipboard before continuing. “Sarah, you will be coming to live with me and my dawter. Biff,” shi continued as shi made a face at the name, “you’ll be living with my dawter’s boifriend, Biffanie.”
“Biffanie!?” Biff repeated, mouth agape. Despite the situation, Sarah couldn’t help but stifle a giggle. It was an odd name. Dr. McMillan didn’t look happy.
“It’s a perfectly normal name for a boi as you’ll soon see. It’s your name that’s weird.”
“Wait?” Biff asked. “What did you just say?”
“Oh yes,” shi replied with a smirk. “In order to blend in, you will be given new names in order to fit into society. Based on our encounter, I would say that our naming system is quite different to yours.” With that remark, Dr. McMillan exited the room, leaving Biff and Sarah to their fate.
