Across town, Sarrah McMillan was driving home in hir blue Mustang with the roof down. Shi had just finished football practice and was heading home after grabbing something to eat with hir teammates. Shi sped through the streets with hir radio on full blast, blaring out some rock music from hir favourite band, and shi was singing alone.
Shi pulled onto hir driveway after having driven through the gated community with hir engines roaring which was sure to annoy all of hir neighbours and waited for the song to finish before killing the engine and locking up.
Digging into hir pockets, Sarrah took out hir house keys and entered the grand foyer that led into hir home. It was after dinner, and so a quick check in the kitchen confirmed that Dad was there tidying up. Mom was probably in the basement, working on another project, so shi headed that way.
“Hey mom,” Sarrah called out as shi descended the stairs into the basement turned laboratory. Sarrah’s mom, Suzan was the CEO of McMillan Tech, which was a large and diversified technology conglomerate. Shi was always bringing home projects to work on.
“Hey sport,” Suzan replied, not looking up from hir desk. “How was practice?”
“Pretty good! I think that we’re going to crush Eastford next week,” Sarrah replied confidently.
“That’s my gurl.”
“What are you working on?” While a quarterback, Suzan had managed to instill a love of science into hir dawter, and the result was a brilliant mind who also excelled at football. Sarrah McMillan was a far cry from your typical high school jock.
“This?” Suzan asked, finally looking up and beckoning hir dawter over. “This is something that the gals in the lab have been working on.”
Sarrah walked over to the desk, and Suzan McMillan pushed back on hir chair a little to give Sarrah some space. On the desk were some blueprints. It looked like some sort of mirror. “We’re calling it the smart mirror,” Suzan explained. “It’s going to revolutionize the shopping industry. Using tiny cameras, bois will be able to see what a dress looks like on them without even trying it on.”
“Wow, Mom! That’s pretty cool. I know that Biffanie would love that.”
“But this is what I really wanted to show you,” Suzan told Sarrah excitedly, pulling out a larger set of blueprints. While McMillan Tech was a public company that made consumer products, it was also a known fact that they worked for the military as a defense contractor. Suzan and hir team had worked on all kinds of projects for the military, from satellites to heat seeking missiles. McMillan Tech had worked on it all.
“It’s a cloning device,” Suzan explained. “The idea is that you step into this chamber and the device scans you and then a perfect copy of yourself appears in this chamber,” shi noted excitedly as shi pointed to different areas.
Sarrah was impressed. “Wow! Imagine having a clone. It would be so cool. I’d be able to attend football practice and work on my homework at the same time!”
Suzan chuckled. “I knew you’d be impressed. In fact, we’re having a test session tomorrow at the lab. I’m sure that I can pull a few strings if you want to come and see,” shi offered.
“Sounds awesome, Mom. We don’t have practice tomorrow, so I should be able to go.”
“Alright. You should probably get started on your homework.” Sarrah went back upstairs, musing about the idea of having two of hir. Sure would make life easier, shi thought.
