Zoe looked surprised at that. She started to open her mouth again and said, "God, Jon, I wish you would just play along!"
The stone was in her pocket, so Zoe didn't notice the flash of light that occurred as she made her wish. She did, however, notice a change in Jon's expression. Gone was the obstinate look her brother had been giving her. Instead he wore a look of annoyance, petulance, even anger.
"Fuck it," he said, adopting a tone a voice that Zoe recognized as her usual tone, "I don't even know what I'm doing wasting my time with you assholes."
Jon stomped off, returning the way he had arrived from. Zoe felt relief. The last thing she wanted was to spend more than a week as her brother. It was bad enough that they had to switch themselves, but the longer they spent, the bigger a chance the other person would screw up their lives. A week was long enough.
Zoe rolled her eyes and looked at Karyn.
"What a bitch," she said, "I can't believe I'm even related to her."
Jon knew it was the wish, but he couldn't help it. Something had changed inside of him. He wanted to play along! Spending a week as his sister Zoe would be awesome. New experiences, new adventures. Who knew what kind of situations he'd get himself into. Maybe if he did it right he'd end up spending more time as her, or as someone else! Either way, he couldn't wait to play along.
He approached Athena, relishing in the feel of his long black skirt on his legs, and smiled darkly. Athena was Zoe's best friend, and therefore Jon's best friend. At least for a week.
"Sorry, I had to take care of something," Jon said, turning toward the row of lockers and spinning his own combination into Zoe's lock. The lock clicked open, showing him that his luck was holding. Jon smiled as he looked at his reflection in the locker mirror. Deep purple lipstick, black eye-liner, he looked dramatic. It was awesome.
"Where'd you go?" Athena asked.
"Oh, just to tell of my asshole brother." Jon replied, grabbing some books and slamming the locker shut, "he's such a dick."
"I know," Athena replied in her sing-song voice, "Maybe tonight we can try that hex that I told you about. That'll show him."
"Great idea," Jon said, excited at the prospect. Athena walked away toward her first class and Jon followed. They shared a schedule, which would make Jon's week go a bit easier. Before they got to their class, however...
