While lots of other literature has children undergoing horrible things, the difference is that in it the horrible things are being presented as horrible things. You're not supposed to be aroused by them--you're supposed to think of them as horrible.
You can have a story that has kids getting maimed by land mines. But you won't have a story which is all about how cool it is to get kids maimed by land mines.
