Jon walked downstairs, but no one seemed to be home. Not yet, anyway. He was about to pick up the phone to call Karyn, maybe ask her if she noticed anything, but then he realized that he hadn't made an exception for her. She might think that it's normal to have only one parent that's not really either male or female.
He turned around and started to head back up to his room to make a wish, but then stopped when he heard the phone ring. He turned back around and picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Jon, what the hell did you do?" It was a boy's voice. It sounded a little familiar, but he couldn't quite place it.
"Who is this?" he asked.
"It's me. Karyn!" the boy yelled.
Karyn? Jon thought. But how? Then he made the realization. Karyn must have been dating someone. But how could she do something like that and not tell him? What made this realization even worse was that he had feelings for Karyn. He always thought that if he waited for the right time, he could ask her out or something, but now ...
Jon was mixed with anger, confusion, and maybe a little curiosity. Who was this mysterious boy who swept Karyn off her feet behind his back?
"Jon? Are you there?" Karyn asked over the phone.
"Yeah, I'm here." At least I don't have to make a wish to clue her in on what's happening around town, he thought dryly. "Listen, Karyn, I didn't mean to have you involved in the wish. It was only meant to affect people who are married or are dating. I didn't know you were dating someone."
"I ... I didn't want to tell you yet. I wasn't sure how you would react. We haven't been dating for too long though. I was just waiting for the right time to tell you. I ..."
"Well, now that I know, who is it?" he asked bluntly.
There was a long pause, then he heard the "mostly-male" Karyn say "I'm dating ..."
