Earlier ...
After Jon finished putting the groceries away, he headed back upstairs with Karyn. On the way to his bedroom, he knocked on his sister's door.
Seeing that Jon was doing what his father asked, Karyn kept on heading to Jon's bedroom. Once inside the room, she sat down on the bed and thought about what to do next. Her eyes landed on the TV and she got an idea.
Turning it on, Karyn then went through the channels, lingering on each one just long enough to get the idea of how much things had changed.
The first channel she saw (it was the channel that Jon had left it on) was, interestingly, the Syfy channel. It looked like Jon was a sci-fi fan in both realities. She smirked, then changed the channel down to the lowest-numbered channel and moved her way up. At this time of day, there were a lot of news programs and reruns (wait a few hours, and there would be prime-time programming), but it was enough to get the gist of it.
Karyn thought she heard the bedroom door open and she turned around. But no one was there. What was taking Jon so long?
Shaking her head, she turned back to the TV. There was a news program where an anchorwoman was wearing a shirt, suit, and tie, her hair short and combed, and, of course, no make-up. The anchorman sitting next to her, however, was wearing a blouse, had his shoulder-length hair styled, wore make-up and earrings, and had a very flirtatious way about him. By comparison, the woman was very serious.
Switching to another channel, she saw a re-run of an old show. It was "Star Trek", except all the genders were reversed. There was Captain Jamie Kirk, played by an actress Karyn didn't recognize, but she was sure that given the popularity of "Star Trek", she was probably well-known in this reality, and then there was Spock (but the part was played by a woman) and Dr. Lenore McCoy, Mary "Scotty" Scott, and so on. The only main male character on the show was the communications officer - Lieutenant Haruni, a black man wearing the same uniform that Lt. Uhura wore in the normal universe version of "Star Trek", but tailored to fit Haruni's masculine body. All the female characters had short combed hair and wore whatever their male counterparts wore in the normal universe version of the show - again, tailored to fit their feminine bodies.
Karyn watched a little of the episode, then changed the channel again. This time, there was a string of commercials. A "McDonald's" commercial, which didn't look like anything different (except for men dressing like women and vice versa); a car commercial, showing a family riding in the car - a woman dressed as a man driving, while her husband sat in the passenger side seat, wearing a dress, and in the back seat, a boy wearing a small top and skinny jeans, and a girl wearing a baggy T-shirt and baggy shorts; the next one was a commercial for "Victor's Secret", showing a bunch of sexy panty-wearing men walking around and showing off the lingerie; and then there was a make-up commercial for "CoverBoy". It was at this time when Jon finally came back.
Coming back in, he said "Hey." Karyn only nodded at him in response, causing Jon to roll his eyes. He was about to join her on his bed, but stopped when he heard yelling coming from downstairs.
"What's that about?" Karyn asked.
Jon listened for a few moments before closing the door. "Oh, Zoe's arguing with Dad again," he said, with a sigh. "You know how she is."
Karyn nodded, as Jon sat down next to her and snuggled up. Annoyingly, they could still hear the yelling through the door, so once Karyn had settled on a channel, she turned up the volume to try and drown out the noise.
So what were Karyn and Jon going to be watching for the next several minutes?
