Later that evening Lara lay sleeping next to Jon. They were both still naked. Jon knew that, if this reality was anything like his own, his mother would soon be calling him down for dinner and that they would definitely need to be dressed for that.
But Jon didn't plan to stay in this reality for dinner. As nice as sex with Lara had been, he needed to get back to his own reality. A reality were he was a boy and was happy with that. He tried not to wake Lara as he got out of the bed. Her continued gentle breathing told him that he had succeeded.
Jon quietly opened the door to his bedroom hoping that it would open onto the hallway with infinite doors. It did open onto a hallway, but it was just the upstairs hallway for his house. Jon tried closing the door and concentrating really hard on the hallway of infinite doors but the upstairs hallway refused to be replaced.
He figured he would need the stone to get back there. Then he remembered that he'd left the stone on his dresser in his own reality. Jon panicked for a second thinking that he was trapped in this reality. Then a thought came to him: almost everything about this reality is the same as my own so there must be a wishing stone in this reality as well.
For the first time Jon tried to summon memories of this reality instead of letting them come as the would. He searched through every memory he could access, but didn't come up with anything. The him from this reality had never encountered the stone. He concentrated for a second on accessing other memories. He could remember that his grandfather had recently died in this reality as well. Then more memories of his grandfather surfaced that were very different than those of his native reality. In this reality his grandfather had been uncomfortable around him and avoided him after he came out as trans. They hadn't had the close relationship that they'd had where he came from. That probably meant, Jon reasoned, that he had given his wishing stone to one of Jon's siblings or maybe one of his cousins.
Jon wasn't sure where to start looking, but he knew that if he didn't find the wishing stone this reality was going to be his home from now on. He also had a feeling that the longer he was here, the more that this life would become his own. Already he was beginning to accept that he was a transwoman and that he wanted to continue his transition. He needed to find the stone and get home before he lost himself completely.
