Omar spent nearly a week torn between the ideals of a normal life versus a perfectly controlled life. He imagined it would be like something out of a game, except instead of seeing options, he would just control their actions with his own. Considering his brother never explained it like that, meant Mathis was probably out of touch with the gaming world even though Omar had spent quite a lot of time playing and discussing them with him. Likening it to such a concept was easier for Omar to grasp and eventually come to terms with it, even though he still felt subconscious about obtaining such an extraordinary gift. It honestly felt too good to pass up and the implications that someone else might use it against him without his knowledge terrified him enough to accept Mathis' proposal. Mathis was overjoyed at Omar's response and immediately began to explain it to him in great detail, but he left one thing out of the explanation. Something very crucial that won't come back to torment him later, Mathis could never control Omar's actions even after he discovered the full potential of this power. It almost certainly meant that one day two beings with the same power would collide at some point in time, but Mathis never thought that this was a possibility as only he had just discovered it.

Though an ominous force lurked somewhere out there, Omar was just casually lying on his bed checking his phone. Two days had passed since he accepted Mathis’ proposal and he felt bad it took him nearly a week to make up his mind. Mathis didn’t scold him or anything, in fact it seemed like he expected it for whatever reason. Omar twiddled with the glasses he now had in hand still curious why something so small gave him so much power. It felt too easy somehow.

Sifting through the email Mathis sent him one more time, Omar tries to get a grasp on how to use this power of "Happenstance" as his brother called it. There seemed to be several rules tied to it, most of which made sense, but there seemed to be something missing from it, yet he couldn’t pinpoint what it was.

“Ah, whatever. Can’t hurt to read through it again.” Omar sighs and rereads the email trying to find that elusive problem.

Hi, Omar. As you know, I have come across something I would like to discuss with you, but to avoid confusion I will refer to this idea as Happenstance from here on. So as I said before, Happenstance is the idea that everything in the world can be controlled through the power of will which manifests as coincidence. It sometimes gets confusing what came about because of that willpower, so I took the liberty of creating rough rules to go by to determine what can and can't be controlled:

  1. Reality cannot be changed directly, however it will change to you the longer you will something to happen.

  2. Intent means everything to Happenstance, so if your intent changes, so will the interpretation of the power change. (eg. you want someone to disappear so they move away, but that intent eventually becomes deadly to the point where Happenstance creates an unfortunate accident that kills them.)

  3. Those around you won’t notice anything strange about things changing, but people from far off will notice everything different almost immediately. (I have not tested the range, but out of town should be a good guess)

  4. Using this for too long can cause undesired side effects that might spill out onto other people. Those side effects may include, unknown aggressiveness towards you, unwanted attention or attraction and unexplainable natural disasters. Some of these side effects will be the result of certain imaginary things coming to life or too much being changed at once.

Now, I know I haven’t told you exactly how Happenstance is used, but I thought it would be best to get the rules out of the way first, before discussing the main topic. I should warn you however, if this power is abused too much, you might find it hard to stop using it like I have. With that out of the way, this is how Happenstance is hereby enabled: by sight. Yes, I know it sounds fishy, but it’s the only way anyone can see between the lines of reality to create such a change. It took me a long time to figure out the way to see or even tap into these lines and as a result, I can no longer unsee what I have trained my eyes to see. Because of my blunder, I have created a pair of sunglasses that I sent to you a short while ago. If my calculations are correct, and they unfortunately always are, you should receive them at the same time as this email. Fundamentally they work to help you see reality and any changes you are going to make via brainwaves. Just be careful with it, alright. I don’t have any spares and going through the hassle of making another one will take a fortune that I don’t have. Regardless, have fun with it and be sure to help me out when I need it, okay?

Thanks again,
Mathis.

PS. Seeing is believing, right?

Omar thoughtfully sighs as yet again something instinctively feels wrong about this. Still, he agreed to it, so might as well try it out right? “Ah, what the heck. This isn’t like me to ponder something so trivial. I’ll just go outside and try these out.”
