Jon--now Jenna--grumbled. Just the other day she was Jon. Now she was in love with Jon, even though she didn't otherwise like guys. She was sitting at a lunch table when Karyn arrived with her own lunch and said "Jenna, what's the matter?"
"It's my sister. Or it's a guy. I don't even know how to explain."
"Try me."
"Okay, Karyn." Jenna got her cellphone out and shuffled through some of the stored photos. On it was a picture of a boy."
"Who's that?" asked Karyn. "It looks a little like you but it can't be. Is it someone you like?"
"I guess it is," replied Jenna. "I mean I do like him but I can't even meet him. The best I can do is wish up his picture and carry it around."
"Uh, I don't get it," said Karyn. "Is this some kind of wish gone wrong?"
"No, it's some kind of wish gone right. My sister got mad at me for wishing her up to be my lover, and she decided I should be in love with Jon just as much as she is. Except I'm Jon."
"You and your sister? You're not lesbians. Why would you be lovers?"
"Okay, you still remember that much, Karyn? I mean, you don't think that it would be strange if we were lovers?"
"Uh, no. Well, I suppose it would be incest, but I mean, it's you and Jen. Anyway, could you start again?"
"Karyn, I was a guy. Jon. One person. I wished for a sister to be my lover. My sister is just something I wished up, and me being a girl is just something she wished up. There was only one of us and that's Jon. She found out and she got mad at me. She turned me into a girl in love with Jon. I mean, I know in my brain that I was Jon, but that doesn't change what I feel. It's as if I have a boyfriend who left town and I can't even call him."
"Were we friends?"
"Yeah, Karyn. This isn't about changing you. It's about my sister and me. But you know what the worst part is? When I go home, she's still going to be there. Maybe that's why incest is supposed to be bad... if you break up with your sister, you're stuck with her, because she's family. You can't just ignore her, this person you're having trouble with is still a part of your life. Now what am I going to do?"
"About what? You have more than one problem there."
"I'm not sure. What would you suggest?"
