Jon stared at his ... her hands. The manicured nails alone would have freaked him out. But the dark skin - so smooth and so hairless - caused his mind to fry. Cliches about black people raced through his brain. Jon had very little experience with nonwhites. Everything he knew was from TV. Zoe was the first nonwhite person he ever talked to. Jon didn't know much about Asians, but he had been exposed to a lot of images of blacks in the media. He did consciously realize that portrayals of blacks were often bogus, yet now that he was one of them, he couldn't help but wonder ...
"Wait a second." Jon didn't recognize his - her own voice. She still sounded like himself. Not "black." "Why would a gender change lead to a race change?"
"Maybe one of our parents married a person of a different race," suggested Zoe. "Maybe both of them did. You could be the child of one couple and I could be the child of the other."
"Hmmm ..." Jon looked at herself in the mirror. "I look totally black. I'm no Halle Berry." I'm actually better looking, thought Jon. "I don't think I have any white ancestry at all. Not sure about you, though." Jon hadn't ever seen a Eurasian.
Zoe still held the stone. "I wish I knew what happened to our family in this reality."
