"Moooooooooooooom!" A shocked cry emerged from the upstairs bathroom. "I'm bleeding!"

Moments later, Taylor, one of Chloe's mothers, knocked on the door to enter and see them sitting on the toilet, tears welling up in their eyes. "What is it, dear?"

"Blood!" They pointed at their groin. At first, Taylor was wondering how that might be possible, but then she realized all at once what was actually happening.

"I can explain, but first, wipe it up." After Chloe cleaned up and there seemed to be no more blood for the moment, Taylor encouraged her child out of the bathroom and sat down with them on their bed.

"What happened?"

"Well, dear... Remember how Mommy Linda and I have told you that there's something that makes our family different from almost everyone else?"

Chloe nodded. They'd heard this before, but only in very abstract terms. All they knew was it explained their name (though girls said it Chloe like Zoe, their parents often called them "Chlo") and why sometimes they weren't like other boys. Occasionally, they got teased about the name at school, but it hadn't happened often. But now that they were in middle school, they admittedly worried a bit about that.

"It runs in the family that all our little boys grow up to be women. And that was..." Taylor paused for moment, hoping her words struck the right note." "Your first monthly visitor."

Chloe was trying to understand what was meant and tilted their head. "What does that mean?"

"You see, your body will go through the same puberty as a girl your age and develop the additional body parts to match. I remember when that happened to me..." Taylor let out a loud sigh, thinking about how rough she'd had it. "And women, even women like us, have a monthly cycle."

Chloe hadn't heard about this much in sex ed, due to a combination of not paying attention and being seated with the boys. They'd heard about beards and deepening voices in their future. "Why didn't you tell me more before?"

"Because I wasn't sure if you were ready, dear. What makes us unique is referred to in the world outside this town, in specialized medical journals and the like, as Gibson syndrome."

"Like... our last name?"

Taylor nodded. "Like you, like Mylie, like me... Like Grandma." It had been a while since Chloe had thought about their grandma, who apparently was doing some big archaeological research in Peru, in South America.

"Is... Is that why you named me Chloe? To prepare me to be a girl?" Taylor nodded. Chloe felt like so much had been explained; clothing choices here or there, why they liked skirts so much, occasional things their moms said, why their childhood wasn't like what they saw in cartoons.

Overwhelmed, Chloe head on her mom, who put an arm around them and held tight.

"Chlo, I know you're not used to it yet, but girl power is stronger than you think."
