Karyn stood up and faced him. "Um..." She was suddenly torn. She wanted a little more time to think about what changes to make, besides his gender of course, but she had a perfect opportunity to do it right now.
With her heart beating what felt like a thousand times a second, she needed to either kiss him or get the hell out of there. A brief moment of clarity had her realize that she couldn't do what she was planning to someone she already cared for and respected so much. She then quickly blurted out, "I'm sorry Jon, I have to go now, see you later." as she ran out the front door.
Karyn kept running. She had to. The 'fight or flight' instict kicked in while she was standing in front of Jon debating what to do. She had so much adrenalin left in her system that running as fast as she could was the only way she could think of to calm herself down. And it was working until she rounded the blind corner at the end of the block and literally ran into Sarah McMillan knocking the cheerleader backward into some fresh cut grass.
"Watch where you're going you stupid dyke", Sarah exclaimed. Sarah didn't know that Karyn actually was a lesbian. She just called her a dyke to degrade the unpopular girl. Karyn was tired of Sarah's name calling and mean spirited attitude. But as Sarah was brushing grass clippings off of her purple and gold uniform, Karyn quickly came up with a plan to get Sarah off of her back for good. Then, she apologized to Sarah while extending her hand out as if to offer to help Sarah up.
