The rock might have flashed, granting Jon's ill-conceived wish but as he took a long look around, culminating in a long hard look at his own reflection in the mirror, it seemed as though nothing had changed. Maybe he'd just gotten lucky on this one. Of course, given Karyn's experience earlier in the day, the idea that the stone might simply cut them a break seemed unlikely. What had he been thinking? Oh well, there was nothing for it now. All he could do was wait and see what havoc he'd unintentionally released. That sure as hell wasn't going to make it easy for him to sleep tonight.
More than a little worried, he decided that maybe he should give Karyn a call and make sure nothing else unfortunate had happened to her.
"Stupid," he whispered to himself as he headed downstairs to grab the phone. "We just learned what happens when you're not careful about your wishing," he thought about his friend's new endowments and her long blond hair, "so what do I do? I make possibly the vaguest, stupidest wish imaginable."
"Did you say something honey?" He noticed his mom washing dishes as he passed through the kitchen.
"No," he said quickly, "Just talking to myself."
Taking the cordless phone, he began to dial Karyn's number as he made his way back upstairs to his room. By the time he closed the door, it was ringing.
"Hello?"
"Karyn?" Jon asked, "That you?"
"Yeah," she said, "What's up Jon?"
"Is everything all right?" he asked carefully, only now realizing that if something had changed, Karyn wouldn't be aware of it.
"As far as I know," through the tone of her voice, Jon could almost visualize her eyes narrowing. "Why Jon? What did you do now? These new breasts and this damn hair are already bad enough. Please tell me you didn't do something stupid." When he didn't answer for a moment, she pressed on, "Jon, what the hell did you do now?"
"I think you should come by Karyn," was the only answer he could give.
"Jon it's ten thirty, can't this wait until morning?"
Jon rolled his eyes, and picked up the stone, "Karyn I wish you were here right now."
The rock flashed, and before he knew it Karyn was sitting on his bed, holding her own phone to her ear. The wish had been spur of the moment, and he hadn't really given much thought to the fact that she might actually be getting ready for bed. Karyn was dressed in nothing more than a fairly plain pair of white panties and a matching T-shirt. The shirt left little to the imagination when it came to her enhanced bust. His newly-blond best friend didn't look happy.
"I have to let you go Jon," she said, talking into the phone and glaring at him. "Apparently some asshole thinks it's okay to just wish me over to his room whenever he wants." Setting the phone down, she stood up. "What the hell Jon?"
"Sorry," he said, trying not to stare at his half-naked friend. "I think I did something stupid though."
"I'll say," she mumbled.
"I mean before wishing you over," try as he might, his eyes occasionally found themselves wandering over her chest and legs.
She shook her head. There was still anger in her voice, but she relented, "Okay Jon-Boy, what exactly did you do?"
"I wished for something interesting."
"Okay, that's kind of vague Jon. If you want my help, you're gonna have to be more specific. What exactly did you wish for?"
"That is it." He set the rock down on his desk. "I held the rock and said, I wish something interesting would happen."
Her eyes went wide. "Oh Jon, that was stupid," she said slowly. Then a smile briefly crossed her lips.
"What?" he asked.
"Well, it's just nice to know that I don't hold the monopoly on stupid wishing. Have you tried wishing to know what the result of your wish would be?"
He shook his head, "No, I didn't think of that. Good idea."
"I have my moments," she said as he picked up the stone.
"I wish to know what effect my wish is going to have."
Nothing. He slumped a little. "Apparently the rock isn't going to tell me," he said, sitting down next to her on the bed.
"Well, things don't seem too different now, so maybe this is something we can deal with in the morning." She stood up and picked up her phone. "Send me home Jon. I'm gonna think about this, and try and get some sleep, and we'll meet up in the morning and discuss it. Right now, I just wanna get back to the mansion."
"Yeah," he said quietly, as he picked up the rock, "Wait, mansion?"
She smiled. "I'm kidding Jon. I know it was kind of mean."
Jon sent her home and did his best to lie down for the night.
As tense as he was feeling, Jon had no trouble falling asleep. When he woke up, the first thing he did was open the drawer on his nightstand and reach for the stone. He was half asleep, so when his hands didn't find it, he tried again. Now his eyes shot open and he sat up. He opened the drawer all the way and began looking inside. It was no use, the stone was gone.
In its place, he found a roll of money. He took it out and examined it. It was a roll of one hundred dollar bills, and there were ten or more of them bound together with a binder.
Jon gasped. What had happened? He knew the stone was gone, but how? Where was it now, and where had the money come from. He was down on his knees searching beneath his bed when he heard his mother's voice calling.
"Jon! You'd better hurry if you're gonna make it to school on time."
Was this part of his terrible, terrible wish?
He glanced at the clock. He and Karyn usually walked to school together in the morning, and she was normally here already. In fact, he was normally up and dressed and eating breakfast this morning so why hadn't his alarm gone off. He clearly remembered setting it.
Quickly, he threw on some clothes and got ready for the day. He tried to ignore the anxiety he was feeling over the missing stone and Karyn's tardiness.
