"You two had a fight, right?" Mel said, referring to Kyla and Jay. "If you really have broken up with him ... tell him first. If you two officially break up, and you still think I'm worth your time ... great."
Kyla looked at him, thinking about that. Did Mel see through her deception? Or was he just smarter than he looked? The only reason she was with Mel was to spite Jay. She wanted Jay to be angry. But did she want Mel (who used to be one of her best friends - Melissa) to pay the price for her feud with Jay? Maybe there was a way that she could get back at Jay without Mel getting hurt.
"You're right," she finally said. "We should hold off. But you should still plan on meeting me at school tomorrow. I'm gonna call Jay tonight and call it off with him."
Mel smiled. "I hope this all works out, Kyla. I really like you."
"But not love?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, that too. I do. I love you. Who doesn't?" he said quickly, feeling a little intimidated again.
They said their goodbyes and as Mel drove off, he wondered exactly what he had gotten himself involved in.
Kyla walked into her house. Her parents were away for the next three days. Something work-related. She wasn't really interested in any of it, so she didn't know much more than that. The only thing she cared about was that she had the house to herself for a little while. And that meant she could do whatever she wanted. Parties and whatnot.
She went to her bedroom and grabbed her phone. Unlike what she told Mel, however, she had no intention of calling Jay. She wanted Jay back more than anything. But he needed to taught a lesson about how to be a proper boyfriend. So instead of calling Jay, Kyla called one of the other two girls-turned-into-boys that she met at the mall that night.
