The moment Jon made his wish, not only his world, but his whole universe changed drastically. Somewhere, far from where Jon sat staring at the magical stone in his hand, somewhere that was completely unreachable by normal people, a group of ... beings would be the best thing to call them ... stood around an orb, and they watched Jon.
"So ... he wants something interesting to happen, hm?" one asked the others. "Is an object that is capable of doing nearly anything in his world not interesting enough?"
"You must admit, he seems to have fallen into something of a routine," another said. "We've watched him go down numerous paths. They mainly end up going down the same few paths over and over again."
"True," a third figure spoke. "What fun is a game when you can so easily predict the outcome of the turns?"
"What can be done? He has been chosen as the pawn. We've tried so many things. We've given others magical objects. We've had his friends, family, and foes steal the stone from him. We've even gotten demons, gods, and angels from his world's religions involved."
"Perhaps it is the pawn that needs to be changed?" the third figure offered.
"We've altered his default form before. Made him look different, started him as a woman ..."
"That's not what I mean. Perhaps we need a different pawn," the third one clarified.
"You know that's not possible," the first figure said. "Once a pawn is chosen, he or she cannot cease being the pawn until he or she is dead ... or incapable of using the stone."
"But this is a unique circumstance," the third pleaded.
"How so?"
"The wish he made. It allows for anything to happen, including making someone else the pawn."
The first figure paused for a moment to think about the possible loophole. After some thought, he looked at the second figure. "What do you think?"
"I think it's fair. It doesn't violate the rules."
"Then so be it. We shall give the stone to someone else. But according to the rules, the pawn needs to be within the range of the stone. And because it is the outcome of his wish, Jon will be aware of all the wishes made by the new pawn. Is it agreed?" he asked the others.
They both nodded.
"It's decided then. When the new pawn awakens tomorrow, he or she will believe that the stone was given to them as a gift. Now, who shall be the new pawn?"
After a few minutes of deliberation, the three decided that the new pawn would be ...
