Jon cringed and looked around, but nothing appeared to happen. He waited, but still nothing happened. Letting out a sigh of relief, he put the stone away and went about the rest of the day. He was still warey, but by bedtime, nothing had still happened, so he turned in. By morning he’d mostly forgotten about the wish and went about it as usual.

First period was Science class and their Chemistry teacher had decided that instead of the usual lesson, they’d all watch a tv report on a recent breakthrough at the local labs of McMillan Industries. Of course most of the students used it as an excuse to slack off and not pay much attention.

“So Doctor,” said the reporter “What is this new breakthrough you’ve made.”

“Well Jim, I can call you Jim right? Well Jim, here at McMillan Industries we have isolated the Clique Gene.”

“The Clique Gene?”

“Yes, as you know, genes determine everything about us, from hair colour, to height, to inherited conditions and so forth. Well we have discovered that there is a gene which greatly influences propensity for what clique someone belongs to.”

“Sounds like something from bad sci-fi to me,” chuckled the reporter.

“Oh my no, it’s very real. For example,” the scientist picked up a sealed glass cylinder containing pink liquid, “Here is the Bimbo virus. If I were to inject you with a sample of this you would become a horney airhead. Or this,” he picked another, this one dark purple “Is the Goth gene; you’d become pale and start wearing dark clothes and makeup. This here is Jock; you’d buff up and love sports. This is geek; your intelligence would skyrocket and you’d love to learn. And so forth.”

“Astounding.” The reporter stepped forwards to inspect one of the containers.

“Now if you’ll follow me we can see a demonstration of this in acti-Put that down that’s dangerous!”

The reporter jumped at the shouted warning, dropping the container he’d been holding. To the horror of both it fell to the floor and shattered, releasing the...
