"Now, if you don't mind, I'm watching something," Jon's mom told him. She turned her attention back to the TV, where the program was returning from a commercial break. From the look of it, it was some sort of lawyer show. His mom sighed, muttering "What I wouldn't give to be a lawyer like that."
Jon was about to turn around and head back upstairs and back to the wishing stone, but before he could, the flash of light that the stone usually created surrounded him, totally covering his vision. It was just like what happened on the stairs.
And when the light dissipated, his mother was gone.
"Mom?" he asked, looking around for her. But she was nowhere to be seen. Then he returned his gaze to the TV that was still on. Instead of a legal drama, it was set to the local news. And on it, he saw his mom! She was professionally dressed and speaking to some reporter. At the bottom of the screen was written LINDA MADISON, ATTORNEY AT LAW. "Wait a minute. Mom's not a lawyer," Jon said aloud.
But then, after some thought, he figured out what must have been happening. Somehow, his mom's remark about wanting to be a lawyer (right before the flash of light) caused her to become a lawyer. Perhaps that's what happened with Mikey and Zoe as well. They must have both made similar thoughts right before he headed downstairs. Mikey must have been fantasizing about his teacher Ms. Warren, and Zoe must have been complaining about their mom not letting her do whatever she wanted.
Jon's eyes went wide, realizing the implications of this. He was basically a walking wish-granter. Only unlike the stone, people didn't have to actually say the words "I wish". All they needed to do was have a moment of wishful thinking.
He looked around nervously, hoping no one came too close to him. He might unintentionally grant someone's wish. It had already happened three times, and that was only in the last five minutes!
