Before you leave, get the RIN-- robot identification number-- for that body. It would be a good idea to look it up on RoboFax, added Karyn.

"Is that anything like CARFAX?" guessed Jon.

Almost exactly the same thing but for robots.

"Will do. Okay, see you." Jon turned back towards Dr. Blunt as he put away his phone.

"Was there anything else you wanted to ask?" asked Blunt.

"I'd just like the, ah, RIN for that unit," said Jon, taking one more look at the body.

"Of course. It never hurts to get the full picture of what you're getting yourself into," agreed the doctor. "I can do a little better than that, though. I'll pay the fee and have RoboFax e-mail you a report. This one's got quite the history. If you like I can send you a version with my annotations."

"I'd appreciate that. Thanks, uh, Dr. Blunt." Jon reached for the notepad on the table by the door and scribbled down his e-mail address. He hoped he had the same address in this time-shifted alternate reality. He seemed to have the same cell phone number.

"No, Jon, thank you. That is, if you don't chicken out." Emily Blunt smirked knowingly.

As soon as Jon got into Karyn's car, he knew Karyn would not stop teasing him.

"Jon's gonna be a gi-irl, Jon's gonna be a gi-irl," Karyn sang. "Be honest. As soon as she offered you the body you jumped on the offer, didn't you?"

"No," groaned Jon. "She offered me a solid job-- not just a job, a career. I can start working there while I'm still in school, then I can make real money once I'm a certified tech. She also offered to cover my tuition if I go for a degree in humanoid technology, after which I can be manager. That's what, just five years away? At that point she said she'll get me a new body built from a scan of my human one. If I go through with this, I could be set for life."

"But in the meantime we need to figure out what we're going to call you," insisted Karyn.

"Ugh, just call me 'Jonnie'. You can pretend it's short for Joanna or whatever floats your boat," sighed Jon. "And no treating me like a girlfriend until this actually happens."

"Sure thing, sweetie," acknowledged Karyn, smirking as she caught a mean look from Jon. "Did you get that number?"

"Yeah, she's even going to send me the whole RoboFax report in my e-mail."

"Good, I can't wait to see what you're getting yourself into."

Back at Karyn's apartment, Jon opened his e-mail, finding the RoboFax reports. He opened the version with Dr. Blunt's annotations.

"I guess this is a little bit unusual," said Jon slowly, for a moment wondering if he was still serious about going through with the operation.
