"We can't do a cataracts surgery on her without knowing if it will work, it's too invasive..." - Said Dr. Jacob, standing by a tree right outside the hospital.
"You yourself are staying overtime to try to help her, Wolowitz." - Said another doctor, a chubby, stocky human man. - "I can take over if you want. You do trust me with the care of the changed, right?"
"Yes, Phil, I do. You're a better ophthalmologist than I am, you just suck at playing office politics. I'm staying late because something did this on purpose to that girl, it seems to have something to do with this new Moon on the sky, it's not human or even changed human and it pisses me off that nothing can be done!" - Said the centauress.
"Do you trust that angel woman so much?" - Said Phil.
"A patient is brought in blinded in one eye. An angel woman shows me a place on the Moon. A detailed examination of the patient's eye shows an actual black cloud in and seemingly around her lens. The angel woman actually does not sound like a crazy person." - Said Jacob, sighing.
The two saw a huge blue flash go up not far from there.
"What the hell was that???" - Said Phil.
Jacob was too busy running towards it.
"Be careful, Jake!"
Jacob was halfway to the place where the flash had happened when she saw the canopy of a tree shake a bit, as if something had jumped to it.
She stopped and looked up to see a squirrel girl. Her fur was bristled. She was clearly scared out of her mind.
"Hey..." - Said the doctor, in as soothing a tone as possible - "What happened? Did you come from there?" - She pointed towards where the blue light had erupted - "Did the blue light scare you? It's okay now..."
"N-no... Th' wolves scared me... They are th' Enemy... I made the blue light... With... W-well..." - Said Lilly.
Mmm. Enemy. This word has been cropping up a lot today... - Thought Jacob.
"Okay... I'm Doctor Jacob Wolowitz... What's your name?" - She asked, gently.
"L-Lilly... You don' believe me, do you?"
"I may well do, actually." - Said Jacob - "The hospital is near here... You can calm down there. Our coffee is horrible, but our hot chocolate is great." - Said Jacob, smiling gently.
Lilly blushed and got down from the tree, deftly.
Jacob allowed her to climb on her horse lower body and gently carried her back, noticing the dark blue branch in her hand.
"Now, Lilly." - She said - "What exactly happened?"
Lilly began telling, taking care not to mention Jenny or the magical girls.
Lilly was calming down and having some cocoa with a nurse that was tending to the scrapes she had gotten when she fell.
The doctors were in the next room.
"You want to do what?" - Asked Phil.
"I want to try a hypothesis." - Said Jacob, evenly.
"Wolowitz..." - Phil began. Then stopped. He was looking for the most tactful way possible to tell his colleague she was insane.
"A blue flame erupts out of nowhere. Nothing is damaged, as the police that looked at the place told us. A little girl with a completely blue branch she calls a wand shows up, scared out of her mind. She says she caused the blue flame to fight against a magical 'enemy', the same word the angel woman said to me." - Said Jacob - "So, yes. I do want to have Lilly use her wand on the Phaco. And then I want to try and use said excimer to perform a cataracts surgery on Haru."
Phil sighed.
"There's no changing your mind, is there? Okay. I'll help. But if this goes south..."
"I'll take the blame." - Said Jacob.
"Okay. I'll go prep up the patient." - Said Phil.
Jacob walked a much calmer Lilly to the excimer.
"Lilly" - She said - "This is a phacoemulsifier. It is used to perform eye surgery that will help people see. I need your help with it."
"My help?" - Said Lilly, blinking.
"You said you created the blue light. And I believe you. I have a patient that was blinded in one eye by this Enemy. I don't feel comfortable treating her with the phacoemulsifier alone..." - Said Jacob - "But now you're here. Do you want to try to see if you can help the girl recover her sight?"
Lilly paused. This was an opportunity to do good. On the other hand, what if she failed?
"But... What if I can't do it?" - Asked Lilly.
Jacob sighed. She remembered the first patient she had to give bad news to. It was hard as a 23-year-old doctor. As a 9-year-old girl it would be harder.
"Then you'll still have tried to do something very good for someone, Lilly." - She smiled - "And if it works, I promise you, there's no feeling like it."
Lilly paused. Then nodded.
"Okay. I need... a pen and paper."
Phil brought Haru in. Lilly looked at her.
"H'llo... What's your name?" - Asked Lilly.
"Call me Haru." - Said Haru. She was wondering what exactly was going on.
Lilly wrote some numbers on a paper, all of them a few times.
She then pressed the paper against the emulsifier, taking care not to touch any sensitive parts.
I want to help Haru see again. - She thought.
Much to Phil's and Haru's surprises, a faint blue light appeared on the numbers on the paper.
The two doctors began the procedure. Lilly sat outside and waited.
Twenty minutes later, Jacob came out, smiling.
"We did it, Lilly."
Haru and Phil came out shortly after. Haru's eye was restored, as if nothing had happened to it. Phil himself was surprised at this.
"Uhm... Jacob? You do know that people don't just walk out after a phaco, right?"
"No, Phil, really?" - Said Jacob, sarcastically - "Look. We examined her eye right after it. There were no post-operatory effects at all, not even the ones that there should have been. I credit Lilly here..."
Haru looked at Lilly, her sight restored. She somehow "saw" perfect symmetry. And somehow knew the Enemy had attacked her as well.
Her third eye was restored.
As Haru checked out with her parents, Jacob smiled.
"Now, Lilly, shall we go to your house? Phil, I'll be back soon to tell everyone about the fantastic idea you had."
"What?" - Asked Phil.
"You get the credit. Phil, we know you need this. I don't. When I said you're a better doctor than I am, I wasn't lying. As I wasn't when I said you suck at playing office politics. So, yes. You get the credit." - Said Jacob.
"Er... Look, Jake, this is mighty nice of you, but I shouldn't. It was your idea." - Said Phil.
"Yes, well, you owe me one when I need it. See, it's not about just being a nice guy. Playing politics also goes through having your friends have a lot of cred so they help you." - Said Jacob, smiling - "I'll take Lilly home. I'll be back soon.
"To be sure..." - Said Phil, smiling - "Lilly should be the one taking the credit."
"I jus' wanna help..." - Said Lilly, blushing.
The doorbell rang.
Abigail opened the door to see a centauress with Lilly on her back.
"Hello." - Said Jacob - "I am Doctor Jacob Wolowitz. This is the Gordons' house, right?"
"Lilly? What were you doing outside?"
Lilly just blushed and walked in.
"I'll 'splain, mommy..."
Jacob paused, figuring that it was Lilly's decision to tell or not what had transpired. She then decided to say one thing.
"Mrs. Gordon, it's Lilly's to tell what happened. But she is fine, she did do some very good things and I am pretty sure that what she chooses to share with you will be the truth. Kindly excuse me. Lilly, you are a very strong girl."
With this, the centauress trotted back into the night.
