Lilly let her instincts take over, and ran. She wasn't in utter panic, however - not yet.

Her father solved problems with his mind.

She had to think.

She still had her "wand", the blue branch.

If I run to Jenny, they will attack her.

That left Jenny as the one person she couldn't run to.

In utter fear, Lilly decided that she would have, nonetheless, to solve this alone.

The wolves followed suit. Julian seemed to take detached pleasure in tormenting her, and they seemed to be enjoying the hunt.

Something in Lilly's mind clicked. The branch did have some magical property, it did help her in that strange situation at the library. And she knew this Enemy feared the numbers...

A primal part of her mind, the squirrel part, the one with the instincts that calculated - from above - the trajectory of something - would have to work overtime for this.

She kept running, hoping to put some distance between herself and them. After a bit, she let the branch touch the ground as she ran. Then she made a sharp turn and kept letting it touch the ground for a while longer. A straight line. She lifted the branch and kept running, the wolves giving chase.

Next she let the branch touch the ground once more. A curve, half the drawing of a heart. A sharp turn. Lift the branch.

She kept running.

Branch to the ground. A curve. Another curve. Lift.

They didn't notice yet... - Thought Lilly - Good.

Branch to the ground. Straight line. Sharp turn. Straight line. Sharp turn. Crossing the first line. Lift.

Branch to the ground. Curve. Sharp turn. Straight line. Sharp turn. Straight line. Lift.

Branch to the ground. Curve. Spiral until the curve touched itself. Lift.

Branch to the ground. Straight line. Sharp turn, but less sharp than the first one. Other straight line. Lift.

Branch to the ground. Two circles, one touching the other. Lift.

Branch to the ground. Curve. Spiral until the curve touched itself. Lift.

Branch to the ground. Ovoid circle. Lift.

The wolves were still giving chase, throughout all of the course.

I wanna protect Jenny. Please. Work...

The enemy, lost in the hunt, lacking the ability that - say - a squirrel girl would have of picturing from above the course they were going through, failed to notice exactly where they were treading and how.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

The numbers Lilly drew on the ground glowed with a blue light.

By then, the Enemy knew. Only, it was too late.

The light hit them.

PAIN. LOSS OF POTENTIAL.
