Rachel's mother Melany sighed, thinking about how she missed being outside in the Sun. Many people likely missed it as well, and yet... She was scared. The debacle with the demonstrators firmly showed her that, no, God wasn't against her daughter, yet she had a change that made some people hate her just due to her looks...
She opened the ceiling door to the attic...
Oh no.
The attic was a part of the house they seldom ever used. They had glued some newspaper to the windows for the shade, and not much else.
And now one of the newspapers had somehow presented a tear. One which allowed a ray to hit Melany directly. She moved out of it, but it was too late.
Gary was in the kitchen when something rather odd happened.
A speech balloon with "GARY, COME HERE, PLEASE!" in bold letters and guiding somewhere behind her door appeared.
What the fuck? - He thought. It sounded like Melany. Wait. That's not right. How could a speech balloon sound like someone? Yet...
Gary walked towards where the source of the... written words.
He saw a young and completely unremarkable - albeit quite cute - human woman, about 25... Yet said woman resembled his wife quite a bit. The woman knocked on a door. No sound came out, but the word "KNOCK" appeared as an onomatopoeia for it. Gary could see the ray of sunshine, too. It wasn't hard to put two and two together.
"Melany?"
"I was hit... Seems I got off lightly, after a fashion..." - Said Melany, silently, as another speech balloon with those words appeared pointing to her mouth. It vanished a few seconds after Gary finished reading it.
Well. - Thought Gary - She's still quite human, and younger at that, but her sounds were replaced by comic book ones. I don't know if I qualify this as mild or huge...
Melany closed the attic door and walked to him and he embraced her. He tried to speak.
"Well, honey, you..." - Then he realized that he was also speaking in speech balloons as she was near him. Seems this happened to those too close to her. He smiled. - "As transformations go, yours seems quite nice, if you don't mind me saying..."
Melany smiled lightly. That was another reason she had married him. He took things in stride and she knew he'd always be there for her.
She kissed him, some comic book hearts appearing around the couple.
