After arriving at school, John and his class were corralled to a room connected to the gymnasium. The school seemed to have consecrated an entire school day to conjoinment class. As the students made their way into this classroom (Normally the health/phys-ed room), they noticed a pile of harnesses in a basketball-bin against the wall.
The students gossiped among themselves s they made their way to their seats. Everyone seemed excited to learn about conjoinment. John found this strange and wondered what all the fuss was about, considering on of these harnesses just seemed like an oversized baby carrier.
It wouldn't be long before John's questions were answered however, as their conjoinment teacher, Miss Radley rolled into the room. To John's surprise, Miss Radley didn't walk into the room as she had so many times before. In this new world, Miss Radley rode around in a wheelchair.
It wasn't long before John noticed that, like his mom and bus driver, Miss Radley was also missing her legs. Except that in her case, she used a wheelchair rather than being carried around by a man. Miss Radley wore only a bathrobe which seemed to be designed for her shortened stature.
"Good morning class." Miss Radley Began
"Good morning Miss Radley" responded the class.
"Today, as you know, we'll be learning about conjoinment. Our proud tradition which improves the lives of men and women everywhere" She continued. "As those of you in my history class may be aware the proud tradition of conjoinment began in the 17th century in pre-revolutionary France. Initially the practice existed only within the French court, beginning as a trend among its female members. In its original form, conjoinment was far more dangerous and undertaking than it is today. Less rigorous sanitary standards and a lack of modern anesthetics made the practice far too risky for the layman to undertake, it was worth it for the wealth women of the court. Conjoinee court members were treated as equals to their conjoiners. A power-shift that advanced the feminist battle for equality by decades."
John hadn't expected so much background information. He had to admit he was beginning to grow tired. it wasn't long before Miss Radley changed subjects however.
