But, like, I’m not Jon. I’m Cat!” Cat paused, realizing what she had just said. Her eyes went wide as she tackled the identity crisis, “Wait... like, I mean... I’m Cat?... Gary! Stop, like, messing with my head!”
She knew, of course, on an intellectual level that she was Jon. She certainly identified with Jon more than with Cat. But instinctively, on a subconscious level, her sense of self was tied to Cat; even though she didn’t like it and certainly wished it wasn’t so. Jon felt like some person that she used to be, and someone that she still desperately wanted to be. But at the moment, she simply was Cat, the sexy high school girl who was obsessed with her own looks, infatuated with shopping, and unhealthily loved caramel macchiatos — whether she liked it or not.
Cat was annoyed to find that Gary simply laughed at her plight, but she had already come to the realization that all of her whining and complaining was getting her nowhere. Gary was not going to change her back for nothing. She knew it was her own fault, that she had allowed Gary to coerce her into agreeing to try this out, but Gary had also been making additional changes that were not in the terms of agreement.
For as much as this whole experience had felt humiliating, emasculating, and objectifying to her so far, she knew it was only going to continue to be hell for her the rest of the way if she kept struggling against it. And because she knew she was not going to get any reprieve back to her old self of Jon any time soon, her only plan was to do what she never dreamed that she would: learn to embrace her new life, for however long it may be.
Ironically, this was exactly what Gary had been encouraging her to do, under his suspicious guise of “experiencing life from the other gender’s perspective”. Cat knew it wasn’t genuine, of course — Gary hadn’t made her a girl, he’d made her into some caricature of femininity, some twisted sexual object of a girl — but the fact was that it was still a completely different way of life that she had led as Jon. And there truly were people in the world who looked and acted like she did now. Gary may have mistaken this new identity for being the definition of the experience of being a girl, but Jon couldn’t deny that it was certainly an experience of some kind.
Trying to resist the changes, especially now that Gary had made it so she actually thought of herself as Cat, would only cause herself more pain, she realized. And, looking back at it, there had already been many moments that she had just been living the life of Cat without even noticing it. She knew it was because of the magic, but she enjoyed shopping yesterday, she loved that caramel macchiato, and it made her feel good to primp and preen and make herself look her best. Sure, Jon would’ve found it vain and conceited, but magic or not these things were who she was now, at least until she changed back.
And, perhaps, she mused, it would do well for her to be less judgemental of such people. Girls like her were just living life doing what they enjoyed, so experiencing life as one would perhaps mean she would stop viewing them as “vain” and “conceited” when she was Jon again, and be more empathetic.
So while she couldn’t make Gary change her back any sooner, she could at least make the experience easier on herself by accepting the fact that Cat is who she was now, and perhaps learn to enjoy the experience — as much as she disapproved of Gary’s view of women! Gary’s somewhat perverted view of women was who she was now.
Of course, she wasn’t naïve enough to think it would be as simple as flipping a switch in her brain. Her new actions and behaviors as Cat felt “natural” to her now to some degree, but Jon still existed in her conscience, and to that part of her this whole new experience was still strange. Not to mention that Gary was constantly laughing at her, mocking her whenever she behaved girlishly, and never letting her forget about her new situation.
But that was the second reason for her decision. She could tell Gary was deriving pleasure from watching her squirm and struggle against the changes he’d made. But she also knew Gary. Gary wasn’t a bad guy, he could just get carried away. So Cat knew he would, to some extent, be feeling guilty for what he’d done. So what better way to exacerbate that guilt than to “lean in” to the changes, so to speak? To remind Gary of all that he’d done to her, and make him feel uncomfortable?
So, as they made their way to class, Cat didn’t try to mute the click-clack of her heels nor the sway of her hips. She exaggerated her bust a little bit, and let her body take over and be flirty, her arm brushing ever so slightly against Gary’s as they walked. She smiled inwardly as she noticed him trying his best to avert his gaze. Surprisingly, Cat felt good about the attention. But, even more so, she didn’t feel as weird as she expected from being so close and forthcoming with a guy. A guy!
Meanwhile, Gary still saw her as Jon trapped in Cat’s body. This wasn’t just some hot girl teasing him; it was one of his close friends.
So while Cat tried her best to embrace — and perhaps even enjoy — her new body, she was also hoping for an outside chance of Gary feeling guilty. Of Gary perhaps easing off on the changes, or maybe even alleviating them somewhat. It wasn’t an airtight plan, but Cat hoped it was better than nothing.
