Kaitlyn Ross nodded amiably, taking a seat in front of the principal's desk. "Alright, what seems to be the issue, sir?"
"Sierra Malina took the day off. Family emergency. We're a bit short-handed today. She was supposed to run detention after school. Can you do it?"
"Well, of course, but no one can get rowdy kids to behave like her," Kaitlyn said. "What was the emergency? Is everyone all right?"
"She said someone broke into her house and her daughter was missing," the principal said.
"Alana? She's in one of my classes. Good student ... but ... I think it's hard for her, having her mom in the school." She'd seen Alana be on the verge of acting out. Kaitlyn had once sworn she saw Alana downtown, dressed very differently, one night, but the girl had denied it.
"It's a fragile situation. I want to keep this quiet. You know she's been separated from her husband, and now with this ... this is the way rumors start."
"I won't tell anyone, sir," she said.
"That's why I'm asking you."
