Lieutenant Thompson fidgeted with the pendant necklace around his neck.
"Whatever you do, don't take that off. Ever," Kendall said.
Thompson left it alone and looked out the window. "So, where are we going?"
"Well, obviously to the school, dear."
Thompson's eyes went wide. What did Kendall just say? He turned and looked at the man dressed in the yellow sundress.
"What?" Kendall asked, seeing how Thompson was looking at him.
"Did you just call me 'dear'?" the lieutenant asked.
"Did I?" He shook his head, grabbing his own pendant necklace and looking at it. "I did say that these might not work."
"But you feel fine right now, don't you?"
"Yes. But that could change. It could be that the pendants are giving us just enough protection to keep us from changing completely. Or it could be that they aren't working at all."
"Shouldn't we do something about it?" the lieutenant asked, getting worried.
"There's nothing we can do. The process has already been initiated," he said, gesturing towards their new outfits. "But it's okay. My people know about the situation. If we do end up as different people, they'll do everything they can to change us back."
"But they don't know who we're becoming. How would they be able to find us?"
Kendall paused. "Good point." He picked up his cellphone again and made another call. But when he began dialing the number, his new persona kicked in again, causing him to call someone other than one of his fellow agents.
