"Can I go now?" Zoe asked her mom.
"I don't see why not, Officer," Linda said.
"Huh?" Zoe asked. Why did her mom call her that? She looked down at herself and was shocked to see that her clothes were different. Instead of her usual Goth clothes, she was wearing a police uniform. It disgusted her, seeing herself wearing the clothes belonging to a cop. Being a Goth, Zoe hated authority. But how could this happen? Clothes didn't just change in the blink of an eye.
"Thank you for helping me find Jon. He's new to town and ..."
"No need to thank me, Mrs. Madison," Zoe said automatically. Wait, what? she thought. Why did I just say that? But then she figured, why wouldn't she say that? She didn't need any thanks for doing her job. "It's all in a day's work, ma'am."
Then she turned and headed out the door. She still felt a little confused, but she knew who she was. She was Officer Zoe Graden, and for the last half an hour, she was helping Mrs. Madison track down Jon Takada, a foreign exchange student from Japan. She was the one who escorted Jon back to the Madison residence. Right? Her memories were a bit fuzzy, but that did sound right to her.
Zoe headed down to the street, but was confused again. Where exactly did she park her squad car?
