First there was muffled talking, then a dim light, as Kendall's eyes opened slowly and he came back consciousness. "Damn that bitch," he mumbled under his breath, as he tried to stand up. But at the moment, he was having trouble. That witch must have used some kind of sleep spell on him. He had a feeling that he wasn't supposed to wake up for a while. Well, too bad for them.
Gaining all of his concentration, he made himself sit up. He looked around and saw that he was in the bathroom - the same place he put Scarlet when he locked her up. Obviously, she got out, because she wasn't there. The room was being lit up by one of those small plug-in nightlights and he could see that he was alone, except for Morris, who was still fast asleep.
After a few minutes, he garnered more of his willpower and stood up. Those witches obviously underestimated him. After so much experience dealing with magic, he was able to build up a kind of defense against it. The spells still affected him, but not completely.
He looked down at Morris. He'd be asleep for a long time, no matter if Kendall tried to wake him or not.
"Now, to get out of here," Kendall said, turning towards the door.
Agent Folmer checked his watch. "What's taking him so long?" he muttered to himself. Kendall was the most punctual guy he knew. He convinced himself (and Agent Willis) that Kendall was just busy, but now it seemed like maybe ...
Suddenly, there was a crashing sound and then a gunshot. Both Agents Folmer and Willis drew their weapons and then quickly, but carefully, approached where the noise was coming from.
What they saw was a chubby guy in a security guard uniform holding a gun on a woman - one of the people just sent over from the agency, to help deal with the phenomenon.
"Where's Kendall? I know he's here," the apparent security guard said.
"He's not here. He's in the field," Agent Folmer said.
"Tell me where he is, or I'll put a bullet in this here lady's head," the man said, pushing the barrel of the gun against her head, to make his point.
"Okay, okay. Just don't do anything," Folmer said. "I'll tell you where he is."
The apparent security guard smiled. "Good." But he wasn't a security guard. He was Brick Harrison. And he had some revenge to take care of and Kendall was the guest of honor.
