Scarlet pushed back the tree branch and looked out onto the street, where there was a long line of cars heading out of town. At the moment, it seemed that the traffic was nearly at a standstill.
Somewhere nearby, she could hear a siren going off and a man's voice. "This is an emergency evacuation! Please, leave town now!" It seemed to be a recording, because it was repeated over and over again every few seconds.
Scarlet turned her attention to her left and saw the motel that Debra described. At the moment, its parking lot was filled with police cars, an ambulance, and a coroner's vehicle. She watched as two women carried a body bag and put it into the coroner's vehicle. She had a feeling that that was Debra's husband ... at least his body.
Suddenly, someone honked. She looked back at the cars trying to leave town. One guy in a red convertible yelled out "What the fuck is going on up there?! I need to get out of town before ..." Then he suddenly stopped and looked around dazed. "Oh dear," he said, sounding like a little old lady, which he probably was now.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, two cops grabbed him and pulled him out of the car. "Officers, please. You're hurting me," he said, in his new quaint voice, as they pulled him away from the traffic jam. Then another officer got behind the wheel and when the traffic started moving again, the officer drove the car off the road so that the cars behind had a clear path out of town.
Having seen enough, she decided to head back to Debra and George to inform them of what was happening in town.
