A minute later, Karyn peeked out of the living room window and saw the last police car drive off.
"That was close," she said. "But what are we going to do about Meagan?"
"Nothing," Jon said. "We don't even know where they took her. The best thing we can do right now is look for the stone. If only I knew who took it."
Karyn looked out the window again. "Did you notice that your mom's car is gone?"
"No, I didn't," Jon said, walking over to the window. "She had no reason to leave today and she was the only one with the keys."
"Maybe someone swapped with her and took the car," Karyn said.
"Do you think she took the stone too?" Jon asked.
"I don't know, but we could at least find out what happened to your mom."
"Good point. Maybe we'll get lucky and find the stone too." Jon paused. "But where should we look for the car? It could be anywhere. It may not even be in town anymore."
"That's a possibility. But we have to do something."
So, they headed outside and began walking towards downtown. It was as good a place as any to start looking.
