After the older woman got off the two bikini-clad college girls, the two girls looked dazed. Ted knew what had happened. They had been swept away and replaced by someone else.
He approached them, not because he still thought they could help him, but because he thought he could help them. He discovered that the moments right after a swap were the most traumatic. Feeling a need to resume his duties as an officer (even dressed as he was), he felt an obligation to help these two girls, or whoever they were now.
By the time he got there, the older woman had already fled the scene, so it was just him and the two girls.
The brunette girl looked around, confused. "Where am I? I was just on a plane."
"Who are you?" Ted asked.
"My name is James. Where's my wife? Where's Angela?" the brunette girl asked.
This was disheartening. Not only did the guy lose his wife, but he also wound up in the body of a young woman - something he hadn't noticed yet, but soon would.
The blond girl turned her head. "What happened?"
Ted walked over to her. "Who are you?" he asked.
"My name is Angela. What am I doing here? I was on a plane with my husband."
"Angela?" the brunette girl asked.
The blond girl turned and looked at the other girl. "Do I know you?"
"It's me. James."
"James? You mean my James? That's impossible. You're a girl."
Ted made a coughing sound, grabbing their attention. "It's been happening all over town. People have been switching bodies for hours."
Behind them, near one of the college buildings, a woman shouted. "What the hell am I wearing?!" They turned and saw her rip off her blouse and the bra underneath.
"See, there's another one. My guess is that a guy has that woman's body now," Ted said.
The two girls looked at each other. "Tell me something that only James would know," the blond one said.
The brunette did as the other wanted and it seemed to satisfy the blond. Then they embraced and then they kissed. It was odd seeing two girls kiss like that, but Ted knew that they were really a married couple. A husband and wife, in the guise of two college girls. What was odder was the fact that both of them ended up in close proximity with each other. Up until now, married couples who got swapped at nearly the same time ended up on opposite sides of town. But these two ended up in two people who were side-by-side.
Richard handed his wife a mirror and she nearly died from the shock. She bursted out in tears. "I'm ugly," she said. "No wonder I had such a hard time convincing people that I was me."
The mayor wanted to comfort his wife, but he couldn't. They were still within the phenomenon zone, so if he touched her, he would be swapped with someone else.
"I'm so sorry, dear," he said, still feeling strange referring to this woman as his wife. She was his wife ... on the inside. But it was still hard for him.
Suddenly, the limo shook, tossing Richard across his seat. "What the hell?" He pushed the intercom button and spoke to the driver. "Michael, what's wrong?"
His answer frightened him. "This is fun! Weeee!"
The car lurched again, tossing him back to where he was sitting a moment ago. It was obvious that his driver had been swapped, probably with a child, as far as it sounded. He looked around for his seat belt - he should have already had it on, like his wife, but this whole situation was so overwhelming that he just forgot. As he looked for it, the car lurched again. This time, it felt like it hit something (probably a curb) and then swerved away in another direction. The movement of the car this time was so violent that it sent him flying towards one of the side windows. As he collided with the glass, a bright flash of light engulfed his vision. He knew from reports that this was what people saw right before they switched bodies. He must have accidentally made contact with his wife - or rather the woman who was now his wife.
When the light occurred, he could feel the pain from the collision with the glass (he wondered how bad the injury was - did his body die from the impact?). But, as the light faded, so did the pain. And then it was gone, replaced with a new one. He wasn't sure why, but his legs hurt like hell. And his arms didn't feel all that well either. He opened his eyes, but saw nothing but darkness. Where was he? Who was he?
