“Thanks for the lift home,” Jonchelle said, smiling at Vanessa as she turned to get out. Vanessa suddenly got out and quickly ran over to Jonchelle’s side of the car and held the door open for her. Jonchelle blushed and giggled, not used to this type of chivalry. Vanessa even held her hand as they walked to the door.
Stopping by the porch, Vanessa took Jonchelle’s other hand and gently pulled her around. Without a warning, she leaned in and lightly pecked Jonchelle on the cheek.
“What was that for?” Jonchelle asked, blushing.
“For tonight. I wanted to thank you for coming over and letting me use the stone on my family.” She smiled before continuing. “And for being such a good friend.”
“Hey, you helped me out when I needed it,” Jonchelle replied, referring to their first meeting at the mall. “It’s only fair that I helped you out in return.”
“I know, but you’ve done so much more than that with the stone. You’ve made life at home more tolerable, and that was before we made the wish.” At this point, Jonchelle was redder than a fire truck with all the blushing that she was doing. “Which is why,” Vanessa continued as she took Jonchelle’s hands, lifted them up slightly and gazed into her eyes, “I wonder if we could be more than, you know, friends.”
Jonchelle blinked. This was certainly unexpected. While she had begun to develop feelings for Vanessa, she had no idea if Vanessa felt the same way. “You mean, like... girlfriends?” she asked, the last word coming out like a whisper.
Vanessa laughed and nodded. “Yeah, girlfriends.”
Jonchelle squealed and lept into Vanessa’s arms. “OMG! Nessaaaaaa! I had no idea that you felt the same way!”
Staggering a bit, Vanessa managed to recover and held Jonchelle in a close embrace, smiling. “So I take that as a yes then?”
Releasing herself, Jonchelle took a step back, grinning. “Of course it’s a yes, dummy,” she laughed, gently punching Vanessa on the arm.
“So how about a date on Friday?” Vanessa asked. Jonchelle couldn’t nod fast enough. Vanessa laughed, and they made arrangements for her to pick up Jonchelle on Friday evening before Vanessa headed home, but not before stealing another kiss from Jonchelle, who was on cloud nine.
Jonchelle watched blissfully as Vanessa headed back to her car. She even returned a little wave as Vanessa got in and drove off into the sunset. Jonchelle stared after the car until it had disappeared around a corner. She sighed heavily before turning around and heading inside her home.
“Jonchelle?” her mom asked from the living room. “Is everything alright? I heard a scream outside.
Jonchelle shook her head. “Oh, no. Mom. Everything is great!” She proceeded to tell her everything that had transpired out on the porch.
“Congratulations, honey! I knew that you two were hitting it off well.”
