Jonchelle didn’t see Karyn again until the next day, just before lunch, when she accosted her and Vanessa in the hallway.
“What do you want?” Vanessa asked, coldly, arms crossed. Karyn scowled at her.
“I wanted to talk to Jon,” she declared angrily, rolling her eyes when the two girls stared at her. “Fine, Jonchelle.” Jonchelle hesitated for a moment before Karyn added, “It’s about the you-know-what.”
“Oh, you mean the stone?” Karyn’s jaw dropped. “It’s okay, Vanessa knows about it.”
“Wait... You told her!?” Jonchelle nodded. “You barely know her!” Karyn’s voice was rising.
“Excuse me!” Jonchelle retorted. “In the last few days, she’s been more of a friend than you have. I think that she deserves to know about the stone.”
“Look, Jonchelle. I know that I haven’t been the best of friends lately, but you have to admit, this whole thing is pretty creepy.” After a moment of silence, Karyn continued. “Everything just happened so fast. One moment we were hanging out, enjoying the holidays and then the next, you suddenly blurted out that you want to spend the year living as a girl.
“This has to be wish related, Jonchelle. Boys just don’t suddenly want to be girls.”
“Karyn, stop. That’s where you’re wrong. Vanessa here didn’t just suddenly want to be a girl, she’s been wanting it her whole life. It’s been hard for her because her family hasn’t accepted who she really is. It’s only through this resolution, and the fact that suddenly people are basically almost transitioning, that she’s had the confidence to show the world who she is. That wasn’t the goal of my resolution, but I’m proud of and happy for her.”
Karyn stood there, in shock. This wasn’t the response that she had expected. She was hoping that she could make Jon come back to his senses, but it seemed that he was actually happy with his new life. Was that possible?
Before Karyn could say anything further, Vanessa walked back to Jonchelle, reached into her purse and grabbed the stone.
“You know what, Karyn? I wish that you would just leave us alone. You're nothing but trouble.”
