It was really starting to weird Sarah out. The class after math was really easy too. And she actually found herself being interested in the subject. It didn't seem like the teacher was droning on and on, like usual. She actually found what he was talking about to be ... thought-provoking?
But when the class was over, she was just as glad as usual, because the next period was lunch. Almost an entire hour to eat and talk with her friends. She had barely seen them today, so it was something to look forward to.
She got her lunch (like usual, it was something light, like a salad), then headed towards her usual table. But when she got there, trouble was waiting for her.
"What do you want, nerd?" Melissa asked, hatefully.
"Melissa, it's me. Sarah. I know it doesn't look like ..."
"I don't care what your name is, you dork."
"Dork? Hey, what the hell is your problem? It's me. Sarah. Sarah McMillan."
"And is that supposed to mean something to me?" Melissa asked.
"What? Of course it is. I'm your friend. I'm the head of the cheerleaders. I'm the most popular girl in this stupid school!" Why were her friends acing so weird? Yeah, she was dressed like a nerd, but she still had her own face. Did they forget what she looked like?
Suddenly, the entire table erupted in laughter.
"What's so funny?" Sarah demanded.
"Yeah, like you could be any of those things," Tiffany said.
"What?" Sarah asked.
"Listen, loser," Melissa said. "Someone like you doesn't have a chance in hell of being our friend, or on the cheerleading squad, or even popular ... period."
"What are you talking about? I ..." She didn't get to finish, because one of her friends shoved her, causing her to trip and fall to the floor, her tray of food flying through the air and dropping on one of the guys at the jock table.
"Who the hell did that?" the boy asked, turning around.
For a moment, Sarah felt nervous. But then she saw that it was Biff. She looked up at him. "Sorry, honey. It was an accident."
"Honey? What the hell? Only my girlfriend gets to call me honey, you dork."
"Huh?"
Biff picked Sarah up off the floor, then shoved her, causing her to flail into another person walking to one of the tables.
"Hey, watch it!" the guy yelled out, managing to not drop his tray of food.
What was happening? Why were her friends and her boyfriend treating her like this?
"Okay, break it up here," one of the cafeteria monitors said, entering the scene. "Now what's the problem?"
"No problem, ma'am," Biff said, sitting back down. "Just taking out the garbage."
Sarah just stared at them. Her friend were still laughing at her and Biff was still glaring at her. What was going on? It was as if they were treating her like ... a nerd.
