When Sarah and her friends began to head down the hallway towards her locker, she had an accidental run-in with Kyla Leeson, one of the nerdiest girls in the school. As always, Kyla wore an unflattering starch white blouse and a plain knee-length skirt.
"Watch out, you dork," Sarah said, knocking the books out of Kyla's hands, causing them to scatter across the floor. Then she continued walking down the hall with Melissa and Tiffany, without even a care.
Kyla crouched down and picked up her stuff, momentarily glancing at Sarah as she did so. She wished she didn't have to put up with that bitch anymore. But what could she do? Sarah was part of the popular crowd and Kyla was just a nerd. It was the order of things, right? That people like Sarah picked on people like her? If only she could change things. Sure, Kyla wasn't as hot as Sarah, but she wasn't ugly either. It's just that her attention was more focused on her studies than on looks and relationships. Was that so wrong? That she valued her mind over more superficial things?
She shook her head, then stood up with her books and binders. She adjusted her glasses, then headed to her first period class for the day: Trigonometry. She sighed to herself, remembering that Sarah was still taking basic Algebra. Apparently, the oh-so-popular girl had trouble with quadratic equations and other things of that sort and had to take basic Algebra over. She chuckled to herself, realizing that Sarah may think she's the better person, but when it came to intelligence, she wasn't even really that close.
"Something funny?" asked her friend Gladys Brewer. Unlike Kyla, who was thin and kind of mousy, Gladys was round and overweight. But physical appearances weren't all that important to Kyla. Gladys was a good person, although shy, and that's why they were friends.
"Just thinking about something. That's all." And with that, they headed into the classroom.
