Jonchelle went to bed that night with mixed emotions. On one hand, she was upset with Karyn, upset that her best friend of nearly 15 years wouldn’t support her in one of her biggest moments in her life. On the other hand, she was really pleased that she had made a friend in Vanessa.
She was everything that Chelle needed right now while Karyn was the exact opposite. Vanessa was there when she needed help buying new clothes. Vanessa was there when Jonchelle was down. Vanessa understood where Chelle wanted to take her life. At this moment, it seemed that she was more of a friend to Jonchelle than Karyn was, and they had only just met.
It was no wonder then, that when Jonchelle lay her head down and started to drift off, that her dreams were influenced with the presence of Vanessa.
Her first dream was a wedding. When she first had this idea, Jonchelle had no intentions of taking it any further at the end of the year; however, here she was standing in the entrance of a church wearing a beautiful white dress. Her mother was standing next to her, looking sharp in a tuxedo. She smiled at her as they began to hear the famous wedding march.
The big doors in front of her opened to the wedding ceremony. Jonchelle gasped as she noticed how many people there were in the benches, and to her surprise, standing at the altar, was Vanessa, looking equally as radiant as Jonchelle in her own white dress.
Jonchelle gulped as her mother took her arm; the butterflies were starting in her stomach, so to calm herself, she drew her attention to the guests. To her surprise, there were a lot of former boys in the crowd all looking pretty in their dresses. Jonchelle tried to make out their faces, but they were blurred out in the dream.
Jonchelle and her mother reached the altar and the priest began the ceremony. Jonchelle’s hands began to tremble as it came time for the exchanging of the rings. Vanessa smiled as took Jonchelle’s hand and as she began to say, “I do,” the dream began to shift.
In the next dream, Jonchelle found herself out on the school’s football field. She was wearing a cheerleading uniform and standing in line with a group of girls. Looking to her left, she saw, to her surprise, Biff. He looked pretty embarrassed to be here, while on her right was again, Vanessa.
“Hey girl,” she said bubbly. “I’m so glad that you talked me into joining the cheer squad. Along with all of our classes that we share, we get to spend so much more time together!”
Jonchelle smiled and nodded as the coach began to instruct them on some moves. It was so much fun getting to spend all this time with Vanessa. She could feel something between the two of them, something that said that they were more than just friends.
The girls started going through some routines, jumping and kicking their legs out. As Jonchelle looked around, she couldn’t help but notice a small figure hunched up in the bleachers. Squinting, Jonchelle tried to get a closer look. It was Karyn!
She looked lonely and honestly, in Jonchelle’s opinion, a little disheveled. The green jumper that she wore looked so out of place now with her blonde hair. It was like she was somewhere in between, in a no man’s (or woman’s) land. Why would anyone choose to live like that?
Jonchelle woke up with a start, the dream ending, and with her last thoughts being about Karyn, she had made up her mind about their relationship.
