"Kyla? What are you doing? That's Karyn's seat," Jon said.
Kyla turned towards him and said "Jon, I am Karyn," as it it were obvious.
Jon stared at her. "What?"
"By now ..." Jennifer said up on stage. "You'll notice that the five people who have been chosen now think that they are one of the other chosen. They will remain this way until the end of the school day on Friday." It was Tuesday right now. "This will give them ample time to witness life through another person's eyes, so to speak."
"Wait a minute," a boy asked from the crowd. "You mean that they don't remember who they really are?"
"Oh no. They do," Jennifer said. "But their minds are trapped within their own bodies, unable to influence their actions in any way. All they can do is watch and listen."
"That's horrible," a girl said from the audience. "You can't make people do that. It's wrong."
"What's done is done," Sarah Taylor said. "It's only for three days. Just deal with it." She turned towards her sister, then nodded. The lights in the auditorium went out again and when they came back, the Taylor Twins were gone. They probably didn't want anyone to see them leave, for fear of retaliation.
Jon turned towards Kyla. "I'm so sorry this happened to you, Kyla. If I hadn't ..." He paused. "I'll try to fix this." By now, it was obvious that his vague wish from the previous day had caused all of this. There was no other good explanation. It was obvious that magic was involved.
"Fix what?" Kyla asked. "And why do you keep calling me 'Kyla'?"
Trapped in her own mind, Kyla watched as Jon apologized to her and felt herself reply that her name wasn't "Kyla". That it was, instead, "Karyn". She tried her best to gain control over her body, but it was no use. She really was a prisoner in her own body.
