Inside the game, Brandon uttered a curse as the flying eyeball dodged another fireball. The fiend was more agile than its awkward appearance implied, and he doubted very much that he could hold it at bay forever ineffectively lobbing fire at it. Brandon launched one more fireball at the creature, then scurried off into the trees by the side of the road, hoping the canopy would buy him some time.
As he stumbled into the brush, barely avoiding the creature as it swooped by him, a glint of metal caught Brandon's eye. Stooping down, he found another hairpin. Of similar shape to his red one, this one was silver, with an intricate design and a golden tassel hanging off. Brandon picked the pin up, mesmerized by the bauble for a moment. The the one eyed creature swooped overhead again, raking the canopy above.
His mind refocused, Brandon quickly slipped the new pin back into his hair bun and tried to think of a plan. The monster was dodging his fire, and any further attempts would likely only succeed in setting the forest aflame. He could try and venture deeper into the forest, but that his apparel wasn't exactly made for traversing through thick vegetation.
Brandon was almost so caught up in pondering his options he almost didn't notice as his hands began to tingle. Glancing down, he saw the air around his hands was beginning to crackle with energy, and the changing boy came to the sudden realization that he a new ability had awoken in him, just like with the fire. Focusing, he worked to channel this new form of power, and after a moment he was pleased as a small bolt of electricity shot out into the nearby trunk of a tree.
Satisfied, Brandon turned and stepped out of the brush, ready to try his new ability on the fiend.
