Actually, "between a rock and a hard place" works quite well. It's just an excerpt from a text I'm translating that has interviews with people. I'm pretty sure the interviewers themselves also bowdlerized it from "fodido" ("fucked", "screwed") into "lascado (literally, "chipped", less literally, "between a rock and a hard place"), and I knew I couldn't really afford to translate it into a curse word. ;)
