"Sorry, son. You can't go that way," a police man said, stopping Jon.
"What ... what happened?" he asked, looking towards where his classroom was. Now it was nothing but a giant pile of debris.
"That was the point of impact."
"Impact? Of what?" Jon asked.
"It was a meteor. Everyone was killed instantly."
"But ..." Jon said, staring at where his classroom used to be. "I ..."
"I know. It's shocking. The chances of something like this are astronomical. Uh ... listen, son," the officer said. "You shouldn't be in here. Parts of the building are still collapsing. It's not safe."
Jon nodded, then made his way towards one of the exits, occasionally being bumped into by other students, police, or firemen.
As Jon emerged from what used to be the high school, he watched emergency personnel running in and out of the collapsing and burning building. The grounds in front of the school were filled with police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances. And also any students and teachers who were lucky enough to make it out alive. Sadly, it didn't look like there were a lot of them.
A paramedic ran towards him and put a blanket around him and guided him away from the school.
As Jon sat down on the grass, he played everything that had happened through his mind and made the realization that if he hadn't been called down to Room 21, he'd be dead along with everyone else in his classroom.
When Jon entered Room 21, no one was there. Could it be that someone knew he would die and got him out of his classroom, to remove him from the impact zone before the meteor hit? How could someone predict something like that? And why was Jon the only one saved?
