Since he knew his mother was home and awake, Jon left his room and went back to the kitchen to see if he could try out his new power. The pamphlet had described use of the controlling ability in loose terms, just enough to give Jon a starting point, just enough to entice him into experimenting.
The eggs that his mother were fried, and so was the bacon. In a chair at the kitchen nook she was seated, reading a newspaper while eating her breakfast alone. The rest of the family was probably still asleep. Unnoticed, Jon stood behind his mother and tried to control her.
The pamphlet had described levels of focus, beginning with the subject, then continuing to the desired result. Jon wasn't sure what that second part meant, but standing behind his mother he could easily focus on her. Concentrating on what she looked like, her movements, the way she was dressed, all of it didn't seem to do anything. Then he began to add what she was like as a person, what he knew of her.
It was like a switch went on in his brain. Suddenly his mother seemed brighter than the rest of the room, like there was a spotlight on her. She seemed more real than anything else he could see. Every movement she made, every breath, every turn of a page was crisp, clear, focused. It was like he was mainlining his mother straight into his brain.
Deciding that it was time to start the second step, he wondered what it was that he should focus on. Something small? Something big? With a grin, Jon decided...
