The outside world met Jon with a warm sun and soft breeze. He squinted as he stared into the sky, small white clouds making their way across a sea of blue. The scent of lilacs hit his nose. Spring had arrived.
Not wanting to give his family a chance to change their minds and follow him, he set out. He decided to go on foot since he had no particular destination in mind. Sure, he could just as easily drive around town, but it had been so long since he'd enjoyed a warm day outside that he couldn't pass it up.
There was a coffee shop in his neighbourhood that Jon felt himself drawn to, not because he was craving coffee, but because it had always been one of his favourite places to waste time. Following the streets, he saw familiar faces, familiar sites; it was good to be home.
The coffee shop, Moe's, was a home-grown brand, not one of the big chains, but rather a small cozy place run by an older husband and wife who had owned the shop for as long as Jon could remember. They greeted him by name when he walked in and took his place in line. That was the kind of thing one could expect at Moe's, friendly service by friendly people.
That was also the reason the line was so long. Jon didn't mind. It gave him a chance to reflect on his life. Something profound had happened to him in the hospital, or maybe before that. He didn't know what, but it had dramatically transformed his family. He hadn't seen any changes in them for a few weeks now, so he figured that whatever it was that had happened to him was finished. Not that the effects were finished.
Far from it.
