Jon, blissfully unaware of any of the events at the mall, stared at the clock. It was now noon. he had spent the last few hours pondering what to do.
"I can't believe how stupid I am..." he said, glancing away from the clock and down to the stone he held in his hands. "I hope whatever my wish did isn't too bad."
He sat on his bed and sighed. "Honestly, after what happened to Karyn, you'd think I would be more careful. Imagine if I had said something even more dangerous, like I wish..." Jon let his sentence drop, remembering what he was holding. "Damn. I can't trust myself with this thing."
He got up and walked over to his dresser, placing the stone back into it's box. He then glanced at the picture of his grandfather that he kept there.
"Why did you give this to me Grandpa?" he asked the picture. "And...where are you?" Jon didn't fully believe that his grandfather had perished. With a stone that was capable of granting wishes, why allow yourself to succumb to death? Jon had tried using the stone to locate his grandfather, but was unable to. He obviously took precautions so that I couldn't find him... Jon thought.
His mind drifted away from where his grandfather could be, and back to the stone. Why had it been given to him? Why not his mother, or his uncle? Why not Zoe, who was only two years younger than Jon. Mikey would be far too young, only at the age of eight. But with all the other options out there, why Jon? Sure, they had gotten along very well, but the same could be said for nearly everyone in the family.
Perhaps it was Jon's love for history? Perhaps it was something only his grandfather truly knew? Either way, Jon felt as though he held the weight of the world upon his shoulders due to this stone. Already two irresponsible wishes had been made. Karyn's wish, unlike Jon's, was relatively harmless. Jon's wish, because of how vague it was, could have done anything...
Jon shook all of these thoughts from his head as he walked out of his room. There must be a reason. he thought. I trust Grandpa.
Jon walked down the stairs and into the living room, where his mother was watching T.V.
"About time you showed your face, Jon. I haven't seen you since breakfast." she said.
"Yeah, I've just been thinking about stuff." Jon said. "I think I'm gonna go over to Karyn's."
"Alright, but Zoe took the car to go to Athena's house." his mother said.
Jon sighed. "I'll walk then. It's not that far." he said. He had been trying to save up for a car, and that goal was almost in reach. Sure, the thought of wishing for one had crossed his mind, but after the previous two wishes that had been made, Jon decided against it. I only need a few hundred more dollars, shouldn't take too long...
With that, Jon grabbed his keys and walked outside. Karyn only lived a few streets over, but it would have been alot more convenient to drive there. He began his walk, still thinking about the stone.
Maybe Karyn can help me figure out what to do with it. Jon thought, forgetting for the moment about the foolish wish he had made earlier in the day.
