"I thought you said that there weren't any sports at this school," Zoe said.
"There aren't," Sarah said. "Unless you count running as a sport."
"Who runs?"
"That's exactly what I mean. Anyone who thinks running is a sport is a fucking idiot."
"No, I mean who runs here, at the school."
Sarah wasn't sure where Zoe was going with this conversation, but she answered her anyway. "Well, there's Trevor Blake and Jay Duncan."
Trevor? He was a Goth, Zoe thought. And Jay was a geek. Now she fully realized what was going on. Her wish turned all the popular people of the school (and probably the entire world) into Goths, but then turned all of the unpopular people (the Goths, the Nerds, the Geeks) into muscular and tanned athletes. Although their lifestyles were different, the popularity of everyone stayed the same. So now Sarah McMillan was still one of the most popular people at school, but at the same time she was a Goth, because it was popular to be Goth. And now Zoe's original friends Athena and Zelda were still two of the most unpopular people at the school, but at the same time they were athletic cheerleaders, because it was unpopular to be cheerleaders and jocks.
The change was so confusing for Zoe. All she wanted was to be popular, and now she had this mess that she made that she wouldn't be able to fix.
She ran after Athena and Zelda. "Wait up, guys," she yelled.
"Zoe! Where are you going?" Sarah yelled behind her.
She knew what she was doing. Yes, she wanted to be popular, but not at the expense of losing her best friends.
