When she entered the kitchen, her mom looked up at her and smiled. Zoe and her mom never really got along with each other, so seeing her smile like that was strange.
"Hey, sweetie. You look nice today," her mom said.
"Huh?"
"I've always said that you look good in that outfit."
"What? You have?" Zoe asked. But then she thought that her mom's weird behavior might have something to do with her wish.
"Of course, I have. Lots of times. Zoe, what's wrong?"
"Um, nothing. I've gotta get going." She walked to the front door and was about to open it, when she saw Jon coming down the stairs. He wasn't a Goth, but he was wearing more black than normal. He wore a black T-shirt and black jeans, but still wore his dark gray sneakers. His hair was a little messy. And when he turned his head, Zoe saw that he had an earring in one ear.
He walked towards her. "Hey, Zoe." Then he left the house. Zoe followed him. Things were already definitely different.
