Jon and Karyn spent most of the day at the mall hiding out from school. Jon did his best to keep her entertained, although he spent a bit more than he would have liked,(Most of it at the arcade) he figured it was only fair with what Karyn was going through. He just hoped he could manage to keep her mind off it.
And despite the bizarre situation they were in, he had to admit that he was having fun. This was the most time he and Karyn had spent together in a long while. Not only that, but Karyn didn't exhibit any further changes until they sat down at the food court.
Karyn bit into her burger and frowned.
"Something wrong?" Jon asked.
"I don't know. It tastes a little weird." She experimentally took another bite. Swallowed, and then set it down.
"I don't feel right. My stomach...I have to go to the bathroom!" Karyn got up and ran for it, her hands covering her mouth, Jon hot on her heels.
Jon waited at the door nervously for the second time that day. He could hear Karyn vomiting up her burger. Much to his relief, she opened the door, but looking very different.
"Ok, maybe the burger wasn't such a good idea." Jon admitted.
"Oh, because I'm turning into a cow, you mean?"
"What? No. Well, I mean, yes, but-" Jon stammered.
Karyn sighed. "It's ok, Jon-boy. It wasn't your fault. I'm just kind of-what?"
She raised her hands to her face, noticing the changes for the first time. They were covered in course hair that was easily apparent, and the skin underneath was a very pale white.
"Oh my God..." She felt her face, discovering a fine layer of stubble on it as well, and not just in places it would be normal for a human. Her cheeks, nose, forehead, every exposed part of her skin seemed to be covered in the hair.
"Jon, get that thing he gave you, quick!"
Jon obliged and handed the hand held device to her. The text on the rest of the screen was the same, but the text under the category "Genotype" was now down to ninety percent.
"Oh shit. Shit. I've lost ten percent!"
"But you don't look that different. It's just hair." Jon tried to sound calm, but he was really very worried for Karyn.
"I know but...the burger! It must be changing me on the inside! That's why I got sick and-" A new wave of nausea wracked her. "I've got to get home. My mom won't be back until dinner anyway."
"I'll drive you. Come on." Jon told her.
