"Think we can use that sense of yours to figure out what's going on in Jon's room?" asked Diane.
"We can try. I've never tried to be more specific than just sensing there is magic around," said Penny
The trio went into Jon's room.
"I'm getting that feeling, but it's more intense. Maybe it's because there is more magic, or a more powerful magic?"
"Can you sense anything else different? Maybe magic has flavors, like ice cream, "suggested Mikey.
"I guess it could, never thought of it that way. Thinking back, the spirits felt a little different than the magician. More...floaty? This one feels very heavy....no more like a current of water, a strong one. Something that will change everything as it goes past. Maybe more like a landslide?"
"What does the necklace feel like? "asked Diane
"My stomach feels like a Rubic's cube."
"So kinda like shifting or changing, "said Mikey
"Sure, I guess, " said Penny.
"I could just ask him, " said Mikey taking out his phone, "I have until the end of the month for international calls and texts."
"How do you ask him? 'Hey Jon, hiding any magical artifacts?" said Diane, with just a touch of sarcasm.
"Exactly, " replied Mikey, not catching the sarcasm and taking out his phone. It was exactly at that point that Mikey got a call from Jon. Mikey answered and put him on speaker with all 3 staring at the phone
"Hey Mikey, how's it going?"
"Going OK Jon, how's it going in Singapore?"
"Living the life, living the life. The people are nice and the food is amazing. I think I've finally figured out MahJong in this country. Almost cost me all my money, but I got it."
"That's nice Jon."
"Have something to ask me?"
The trio looked at eachother and Mikey replied, "Yes."
"Ask away, I'll answer whatever question you ask."
"...Do you have anything magical?"
"Yes," said Jon not missing a beat and not laughing at all. As one, they all looked up at eachother with eyes wide open. Mikey's mouth was agape.
"I can tell you expected that answer, but still were kind of surprised."
"Yes, " said Mikey
"So keep asking."
"What is it?" asked Penny
"It's a magical rock that grants wishes."
"That's amazing!" said Diane.
"I think so too, " said Jon
"How long have you had it?" asked Mikey
"Since Grandpa died. He gave it to me. I've had it near me every since. After the first couple months, I have been storing it in a pocket dimension based in my room and some safeguards. That's how I knew you were in the room looking for it. It also let me have great timing for my call. The look on all your faces was hilarious."
"This just goes to show you, siblings will always be siblings, even if they have all powerful wishing stones, " said Diane.
"What kind of wishing have you done?" asked Mikey
"Smarts, money sometimes, adaptability. The first wish on the rock was actually done by Karyn, and she's had a few since."
"...any wishes related to me?" asked Mikey
"Yes."
"What were they?"
"I wished you were in the girl scouts and you would find a way to fit in. I also wished to make sure we would have certain trips and experiences as a family. You remember mom and dad's sudden promotion last year?"
"Wait, go back a step. You are responsible for the necklace?" asked Mikey with some anger
"Not directly, I didn't specify how you would fit in. The rock make the necklace a thing."
Mikey was squeezing the phone very hard and was starting to take deep breaths. Diane and Penny looked at eachother.
'You ASSHOLE! My whole life is changed! My sense of self was shattered and I had to put it back together. I could have been a normal boy, and you went and fucked that all up!" yelled Mikey.
"I did mess that up for you, and I'm sorry. I didn't even know what the necklace did, although Karyn did figure it out. I was too stubborn then to use the rock to find out. I didn't know about what the necklace could do until Delphi and by then you seemed pretty comfortable with it. I'm really sorry I didn't come clean earlier."
"You should be, " said Diane.
"I really am Mikey. How can I make it up to you?"
